Zircon, the December birthstone, gets its name from the Greeks. The legend of Zircon began when Hyacinth, a Greek youth, was killed. The wild hyacinth flower was believed to have sprung from his spilled blood. Since wild hyacinths in Greece are blue to blue violet, Pliny, the Roman scholar, compared Zircon to hyacinth.
