February's Birthstone:
Amethyst
Amethyst is February's birthstone. The
amethyst's color range is from pale lilac to deep purple. The pale colors are sometimes
called "Rose de France" and were lavishly used in Victorian jewelry. Deep,
vibrant colors are the most valuable, particularly a rich purple. These gemstones are
mined in South America and Africa; some are found in Australia.
Legends surround the amethyst. From Greek
mythology we learn that Dionysius, the god of intoxication, was angered one day by an
insult from a mere mortal, and he swore revenge on the next mortal who crossed his path,
creating fierce tigers to carry out his wish. Along came the unsuspecting Amethyst, a
beautiful young maiden on her way to pay tribute to the goddess Diana. Diana turned
Amethyst into a statue of pure crystalline quartz to protect her from the tigers' brutal
claws. Dionysius wept tears of wine in remorse for his action as he saw the beautiful
statue. The god's tears stained the quartz purple, creating the gemstone we know today.
