November's Birthstone: Topaz

Topaz gets its name from an often fog-covered island in the Red Sea, Topazios, a Greek word meaning, "to guess." Topaz is the most misused name in the gem world, since it is given to citrine and smoky quartz, which are not topaz. Topaz comes in many colors from champagne to yellow to blue. Topaz crystals are sometimes enormous, reaching several hundreds of pounds. Gems up to 20,000 carats have been cut. The gemstone is very hard and wears well in jewelry. Always a wonderful value, the topaz is an affordable gemstone.
